About the Dragon Café Feeding Ministry
In the fall of 2005, we were called by the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana to open our doors to serve meals to our neighbors, relief workers, and volunteers helping in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In the early days of the repopulation of New Orleans, many citizens found themselves without gas to cook meals and extremely limited hours at grocery stores and restaurants to buy food. St. George's soon became a place where our neighbors gathered to reunite with friends, tell their stories, eat a delicious dinner, and relax in a safe environment. Our goal was to serve food that was hot, hearty, and made with love.
Over the past two years, while the needs of those we serve have changed, St. George's remains a place where the hungry are fed and friends continue to gather to share a delicious dinner. Anyone looking for a free, hot meal is welcome. On average we serve about 120 people each night.
We would like to say thank you to all who have volunteered at the Dragon Café. We have met so many kind and generous people from around the city of New Orleans and the United States who have taken their time to serve meals with us. We also thank the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Barrington, IL for their financial assistance.
The Dragon Café is open Thursday and Friday from 4:30 – 6:30 pm.
December 2, 2007 marked the second anniversary of the Dragon Café Feeding Ministry. Last year we served over 13,000 meals to hungry citizens and out of town volunteers doing recovery work in the City of New Orleans.
